Review

This was another good pizza alongside Lago d’Averno. Although sometimes a nightmare to reach, the lakeside restaurants do have parking and a decent view of the lakes once you find your way through the convoluted mess of one-way roads, dead ends and roving packs of wild dogs. If you are eating at a pizzeria late in the evening (around midnight), there are regular firework shows Friday through Sunday starting in the Spring and continuing through the late Summer. In addition to producing awesome Pizza, Naples as a region does have a talent for supporting excellent firework shows. The regular rotation of local villages and towns’ Saints day provide a busy calendar for pyrotechnic enthusiasts. Lago d’Averno is a great location to take several of these shows in and enjoy a pizza.

Diavola pizzas are by design spicy pizzas, and the best versions of this pizza come with balancing flavors of sweet and spicy. Since there are only three other toppings to this pizza after the salami; tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella, the pizzaiolo will usually try to complement the spicy meat with the sweeter tastes from the saccharine flavor of ripened tomatoes to Italian sweet basil. A bland mozzarella (that’s a positive aspect of mozzarella in a diavola pizza) and a thick crust all provide a moderating context to enjoy picante-seasoned salami. In this case the topping balance was superb, and the pizza crust was more than sufficient. On a scale of one to ten I give the toppings a 7 and the crust a 6.
