Review

Re Ferdinando II Pizzeria, or King Ferdinan the Second Pizzeria, produces above average seafood. Walking along the cobble stone streets of old town Gaeta, you quickly gain an appreciation of the freshness of the sea food in this town. Truck loads of fresh squid and octopus are conveyed back and forth along the inclined streets, held only in the truck bed by a careful assortment of styrofoam containers. The port city of Gaeta serves sea food well and by extension Frutti di Mare pizza as well. The ‘Scettro di re Ferdinando’ pizza I tried comes in ‘rotolana’ shape with seafood ingredients. You may be surprised the first time you order a rotolana, as it is under the pizza menu, but decidedly un-pizza like in appearance. The rotolana would probably fall under a ‘baked wrap’ category outside of Italy, but in Italy a rotolana is just another way to serve a pizza. My rotolana included fresh seafood and a marinara base. The seafood was predictably fresh and tender, and the marinara was an excellent means to season the calamari, octopus, and shrimp. The crust was less impressive, and was not especially chewy, crispy or rich in flavor. On a scale of one to ten I give the toppings a 7 and the crust a 4.5
