Review

La Lucerna, which seems to count more than a few of Naples’ soccer celebrities as its patrons, does a fine job baking the mezza luna pizza. The mezza luna, or half moon pizza, is a good combination of the calorie heavy ricotta and ham ripieno pizza, paired with the lighter, but still thoroughly Neapolitan, Margherita half pizza. The pizza’s dense crust and tomato-mozzarella base has a thickness that makes the thin crust pizzas in Rome look like flimsy appetizers.

The hunger-erasing ricotta and ham portion of this pizza is delicious, and although the ricotta stuffing is served at a near mouth-scalding temperature, you may find yourself sacrificing temporary comfort on behalf of your stomach. I have had mixed results from La Lucerna Pizzeria, with some losers like the quattro stagioni, and some winners like the salsiccia e friarielli. The mezza luna pizza from La Lucerna definitely falls into the latter category of successful pizzas, and when their pizzaiolo is on top of his game, he is probably one of the best in the business. The quality of this pizza certainly gives some indication as to why Naple’s soccer players choose to dine here.

On a scale of one to ten I give the toppings a 6 and the crust a 6
