Review

Occasionally pizzerias vary from the traditional disc shaped pizzas in favor of something more eye-catching, like a pizza rotolana, the mare luna or the bowl-shaped pizza bombetta. Pizzeria Zona-A adds to that short list of non-standard pizzas with their own tennis racquet-shaped pizza, the Rachetta.

No different than a filleto or al-crudo pizza in terms of toppings; fresh arugula, cherry tomatoes, and parmesan, the Rachetta offers a bonus of ricotta stuffed crust in the ‘handle’ of the tennis racquet. A solid blob of buffalo mozzarella sits in the center of the pizza representing the tennis ball. Novelty aside, the pizza itself has above average toppings and average crust. The pizzaiolo managed to evenly cook the ‘tennis handle’ crust and the main pizza itself with about uniform crispiness. The pizza crust was still chewy on the inside but lost its flavor by the end of the meal. The ricotta and ham ‘handle’ was excellent, the arugula and regular ‘fior di latte’ mozzarella less so. The buffalo mozzarella ‘tennis ball’ at the center, saved for last, was a nice treat. Zona-A also offers a ‘Bombetta’ pizza and a ‘Pizza Canoli’ which I intend to try as well. Zona-A did not sacrifice quality for novelty, and the end result is a just above average pizza. On a scale of one to ten I give the toppings a 5.5 and the crust a 4
