Review

Batis is another one of Porto di Baia’s (west of downtown Naples) better restaurants. Built into the facade of a stone bakery and a water cistern used during the 1800’s, the interior dining has an inviting feel that looks like a stone cave. The stone walls and candles make it seem as if you are dining in some sort of ancient grotto, and the food served lives up to the meal you might expect to have in such an ambience. The pizza was good, but not spectacular. The ‘Batis’ pizza had just two ingredients; smoked cheese, and zucchini. My experience with simple ingredients on pizzas has almost always been good. If the pizzaiolo is willing to minimize the toppings, it is usually because they believe it will maximize the taste. The Batis pizza achieves average results. The smoked cheese lacked the rich flavor I would expect from smoked mozzarella or provolone, and the sliced zucchini were too small to really enjoy the tenderness of the vegetable. The pizza was still good, and the pizzaiolo did a better job with the dough and crust preparation. On a scale of one to ten I give the toppings a 4.5 and the crust a 6
