La Vela has the unfortunate status of being located next to Porto di Baia’s best pizzeria, Il Tucano. La Vela may feel like an inadequate younger sibling next to the hugely popular pizzeria of Il Tucano. La Vela does diversify away from pizza, serving pasta dishes as well, but judging from the pizza alone this restaurant does not compete well with its neighbors. A Siciliana pizza should show-off one of Southern Italy’s best vegetables: Eggplant. This pizza fails to do that, mainly because of an inadequate pizza base. This pizza uses bland tomato paste, and mozzarella that possesses little richness. The only good part of the pizza is the crust, which was a typically Neapolitan full-bodied crust.
