I may have been heavily influenced by exhaustion in rating this pizzeria, but after an hour-long trek and thirteen switchbacks up steep cobblestone roads, I was more than ready to eat a good pizza. Pizzeria Sbrescia, at least on a map, looks very close to Piazza Sannazzaro in downtown Posillipo. In reality the pizzeria is at the top of a cliff which sits overlooking Piazza Sannazzaro and the bay of Naples. If you make the mistake of going too far down the street, as I did, you have a long uphill walk back to the top of the cliff. The area around Sbrescia seems to be the lover’s hangout of downtown Naples, with declarations of love drawn out in chalk writing across the slanted cobblestone. Most of these are in huge block script, many strangely written in English as well as Italian, such as ‘I need you Fede (Federica)!’ or ‘Paulo loves Val’ . The numerous switchbacks and steep gradient changes create ideal spots to view the lights of downtown Naples and for couples to get limited seclusion while perched on scooters.

Once I finally reached the top of the hill I was almost denied my pizza, when a waiter said the restaurant was closed for a private wedding function. I managed to plead to have an express pizza delivered to me at the side entrance, which the waiter finally granted me. Unfortunately I forgot my camera on this trip and you’ll just have to take my word for it that the pizza looked just like every other simple Margherita pizza you may have seen. This pizza was great though with rich mozzarella and hot tomato sauce flavored with just enough basil. I know I was probably influenced by the exertion of initially getting to Sbrescia, but even if that was true, this pizza was no less than average or above average. I’ll just have to have a second pizza here to determine if Sbrescia is really a great pizzeria. On a scale of one to ten I give the toppings a 6 and the crust a 6
